You’ve heard of the “new” trend in business cards right?  Digital versions.  Smartphone Apps and website services to replace the paper cards.  Do they work?  Are digital business cards better?  In this article we’ll review a few of the newer digital options, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of digital business cards and answer the question of if they are better than paper cards.

What are digital business cards?

They are electronic versions of business cards.  You can share them with people through smartphone apps.  And your prospects don’t need to have the app or even a smartphone for that matter as these tools allow you to send your card in an email as well.

Digital business cards do solve the age old question of what do I put on my business card.  Because they are not really bound by the standard business card sizes they can hold more information.  They can include real live links to websites and social networking accounts.

Another benefit is the cost savings aspect, as you never run out of digital business cards.   Although some services do limit you in how many different cards you can have.

The main thing I took away is the newer apps are a little buggy, not all services are available for all smartphone devices and there are not a lot of options yet on some of the newer apps.

The main thing, I think, and the answer to the question of whether or not digital business cards are better than paper business cards is: Are you really connecting with someone when you email them your business card?  Or zap your info into their smartphone?  I’m sure there are some who will disagree with me here, but I don’t think you make the same connection you would when actually handing out that little piece of marketing gold!
